How many weeks would my savings last if my pay stopped?
Define the savings amount
A weeks-of-savings calculation divides a stated pot of money by a stated weekly spending amount. It gives a scenario using those inputs. Write the balance date, currency and accounts included. Add each balance once. Separate transfers between your accounts so the same money is counted once. Show any money already assigned to a bill explicitly.
Worked example with made-up figures
Repeating
- Fictional sample rent
- A$270.97 / week
- Telco One

- Fictional sample groceries

Together A$294.84 a week.
Get your own answer, first one freeUse a weekly spending figure
Choose a statement period with clear dates. Copy outgoing payments and group them under labels that fit your records. Exclude transfers counted elsewhere. Divide a four-week spending total by four for a weekly amount. For a monthly recurring amount, multiplying by twelve and dividing by fifty-two gives a weekly average. Label each conversion so the original amount remains visible.
Include less frequent bills
Annual and quarterly bills may fall outside a short statement window. List their amounts and periods, then convert them to weekly averages. Separately list large payments with known due dates. An average spreads spending across time; a due-date list shows when money actually leaves. The two views explain different aspects of the records, especially when a large bill falls near the start.
Example: made-up figures
Suppose savings are 6,000 currency units. A bill of 1,000 is already assigned against the balance, leaving 5,000 for this scenario. Spending is estimated at 400 per week plus 100 per week for less frequent bills, totalling 500. Divide 5,000 by 500: the result is ten weeks. This assumes pay stops, other income is zero and spending stays at the listed weekly amount.
Keep the assumptions visible
At 400 per week, the same 5,000 gives twelve and a half weeks; at 625, it gives eight weeks. These are examples rather than measured predictions. Retain the balance date, spending period, excluded amounts and any income assumed to continue beside your own result. It states what the savings cover under that scenario. The due-date list shows any earlier cash requirement within the period.
Keep a record of your check
Write the document dates and page numbers beside your notes. Trace each copied amount back to its original row, then repeat the addition and subtraction once. Keep estimates visibly labelled and retain the original units. This leaves a clear record of which numbers came from documents and which came from your calculation, so another person can follow the same steps with the same papers.
